Germany Reaffirms Strong Support for Ukraine During Kyiv Visit

German Finance Minister and Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil arrived in Kyiv on Monday in a surprise visit, sending a clear message of continued support for Ukraine. Klingbeil, who also leads Germany’s Social Democratic Party, stated that President Vladimir Putin should have “no illusions” about Germany’s stance. He emphasized that Germany remains Ukraine’s second-largest supporter globally and the leading contributor in Europe, with €50.5 billion in assistance provided since the start of the war in February 2022.

Klingbeil said Ukraine can continue to count on Germany’s backing in its fight against Russian aggression. He urged Putin to show genuine interest in a peace process for what has become Europe’s deadliest conflict in eight decades. The minister’s comments come amid growing international discussion over possible frameworks for ending the war. While U.S. President Donald Trump has pushed for a quick resolution, Kyiv and its allies fear such a move could result in a deal on Russian terms.

Klingbeil stressed that Ukraine must be directly involved in any talks, and he called for reliable security guarantees alongside a ceasefire. He noted that Germany is working closely with international partners to secure a lasting peace settlement.

Discussions over Ukraine’s future security arrangements have intensified in recent weeks. Both French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer have expressed support for possible troop deployments to Ukraine as part of a “coalition of the willing” following a potential peace deal. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has also indicated openness to considering such a step, although the idea would face significant political resistance both within Germany and from other countries.

Klingbeil reiterated that any peace process must involve Ukraine as an equal partner. He argued that without clear security guarantees, any ceasefire agreement would be unstable and could risk repeating the failures of past accords. “To this end, we are coordinating closely internationally,” he said, underlining Germany’s role in aligning European and transatlantic efforts.

The minister’s visit highlights Berlin’s determination to maintain a leading role in supporting Ukraine, both financially and diplomatically. As the war stretches into its third year, Klingbeil’s remarks were intended to reassure both Ukraine and Germany’s allies that support will not fade despite political debates at home.
