Gakpo opens up on Liverpool 'difficulties' since Jota's death

Cody Gakpo has spoken emotionally about the heartbreak Liverpool players have experienced following the tragic death of teammate Diogo Jota. The Portuguese forward, aged 28, died alongside his brother Andre Silva in a car accident on July 3. The devastating news shocked the football world, with tributes pouring in from fans, players, and clubs globally. Gakpo, who was on vacation at the time, explained how the team quickly came together to support the family and each other. He shared how the Liverpool squad tried to help behind the scenes, reaching out in private ways that may not have made headlines. The team attended Jota’s funeral in Gondomar and paid their respects at a shrine set up outside Anfield. Gakpo stressed the emotional weight the tragedy has left on the team, highlighting how much Jota meant to them personally, beyond football.

In a heartfelt interview, Gakpo emphasized that Jota was loved by everyone at Liverpool not only for his skills on the pitch but also for his warm and kind personality. He said the club is focused on honoring Jota’s memory not just as a player but as a person, someone who brought joy to everyone around him. Liverpool have officially retired Jota’s squad number, 20, and the players will wear a “Forever 20” emblem on their shirts and jackets throughout the 2025–26 season. Gakpo noted that this is just a small gesture to reflect how much Jota meant to the team. He said the loss would be felt every day during games, in training, and beyond. As Liverpool prepare to return to Anfield for their first home match since Jota’s passing, more tributes are planned, ensuring that his memory continues to live on in the hearts of teammates, fans, and the entire football community.
