Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua Faces Backlash over Divisive Remarks on U.S. Tour

 

Former Kenyan Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has ignited controversy with his recent U.S. tour, where he allegedly made divisive statements that have drawn sharp criticism from political leaders and commentators. Gachagua is accused of urging the Kenyan diaspora to halt remittances as a form of protest against President William Ruto’s administration and threatening to reveal sensitive details about Ruto’s alleged dealings to foreign authorities.

Prominent figures, including Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and Kapsaret MP Oscar Sudi, have condemned Gachagua’s remarks as reckless and detrimental to Kenya’s national unity and global reputation. Mudavadi, speaking in Funyula, Busia County, described Gachagua’s actions as unpatriotic, accusing him of fanning tribalism and misleading the diaspora with baseless claims, such as alleging government ties to terrorist groups like Al-Shabaab. Sudi labeled Gachagua’s call to withhold remittances as economic sabotage, emphasizing the critical role of diaspora funds in supporting Kenyan families and bolstering foreign exchange reserves.
