China Backs Thailand–Cambodia Talks to End Border Dispute

 

China has voiced its support for Thailand and Cambodia as the two Southeast Asian nations work to resolve their long-running border dispute. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Beijing is willing to offer assistance if it is in line with the wishes of both governments. Speaking in a statement on Thursday, Wang emphasised that China encourages both sides to continue dialogue and rebuild mutual trust. His comments came after meeting the foreign ministers of Thailand and Cambodia on the sidelines of the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Yunnan province, southwestern China.

The border tensions between Thailand and Cambodia have historical roots, often flaring over contested areas, including those near important cultural heritage sites. China’s position reflects its growing role as a diplomatic player in Southeast Asia, where it has often acted as a facilitator in regional disputes. Wang’s remarks indicate that China will not impose solutions but will support efforts that both nations agree upon. The Lancang-Mekong meeting, which gathers countries connected by the Mekong River, serves as a platform for discussing political, economic, and security issues. China’s involvement underscores its strategic interest in maintaining stability in the region, particularly among its close neighbours and economic partners.

During his meetings in Yunnan, Wang Yi highlighted the importance of dialogue in resolving disputes peacefully and stressed that mutual trust is essential for long-term stability between Thailand and Cambodia. He stated that China hopes both countries will use diplomacy to address their differences and avoid actions that could worsen tensions. The offer of assistance is conditional on both nations requesting it, suggesting Beijing will act only as a supportive partner rather than an active mediator unless invited.

Thailand and Cambodia’s border disputes have periodically strained relations, leading to diplomatic tensions and, in past years, military standoffs.
