Cambodia has announced it will nominate U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, citing his role in ending a recent violent border conflict with Thailand. According to Cambodia’s Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol, Trump personally intervened in the crisis, making a direct call that helped break the diplomatic deadlock. The five-day conflict between the two Southeast Asian neighbors was the worst in over a decade, leading to at least 43 deaths and forcing over 300,000 people from their homes.

A ceasefire was eventually reached during talks in Malaysia, with many attributing the breakthrough to Trump’s involvement. The Cambodian official publicly thanked Trump for his efforts, calling them “great efforts for peace.” The White House also weighed in after the ceasefire announcement, with spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt posting online that “Trump made it happen,” and urging that he be given the Nobel Peace Prize.
Cambodia joins Pakistan and Israel in endorsing Trump for the award. Pakistan praised his mediation with India earlier in the year, while Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu said he had already nominated Trump. These endorsements highlight Trump’s growing international support for his direct approach to conflict resolution.
In addition to his role in helping end the Cambodia-Thailand conflict, Donald Trump also played a part in easing economic pressure on Cambodia through U.S. trade policy. Cambodia’s Deputy Prime Minister revealed that Washington had initially threatened to impose a steep 49% tariff on Cambodian garment and footwear exports. Such a rate would have devastated Cambodia’s economy, especially its crucial textile sector.
However, following negotiations, the U.S. agreed to significantly reduce the tariff to 36% and later down to 19%. This decision, according to Cambodian officials, was influenced by Trump’s administration and prevented large-scale economic hardship in the country. The garment industry is a cornerstone of Cambodia’s economy and employs hundreds of thousands of workers, particularly women.
Sun Chanthol expressed deep appreciation for the tariff relief and noted that Cambodia considers this another form of peacebuilding, as economic stability reduces the chance of future conflict. This trade-related assistance further strengthened Cambodia’s resolve to nominate Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, not only for political mediation but also for helping safeguard the livelihoods of their citizens through economic diplomacy.
