Boxing champ Chavez Jr released while awaiting Mexico trial

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., the 39 year old son of legendary Mexican boxer Julio Cesar Chavez, has been released from custody in northern Mexico while awaiting trial. He was arrested last week after being deported from the United States, where he had been held by immigration authorities following his July defeat to Jake Paul in a high profile boxing match.

A judge in Hermosillo, Sonora, ruled that Chavez Jr. may continue his legal process outside of jail, despite accusations from Mexican prosecutors that he acted as a henchman for the Sinaloa Cartel. The cartel has been designated a terrorist organization by the United States earlier this year. Local reports say Chavez Jr. has already returned home to his family following the decision.

His lawyer, Ruben Fernando Benitez, argued strongly that there was no solid evidence to support the accusations against his client. Speaking to reporters, Benitez said prosecutors have failed to present proof of cartel involvement or any other crimes. The court’s ruling means that while Chavez Jr. still faces trial, he will not remain behind bars during the proceedings

The legal case against Chavez Jr. continues to draw national and international attention. Prosecutors in Mexico have alleged that he was involved with arms trafficking and organized crime through ties to the Sinaloa Cartel, one of the most powerful criminal groups in the country. They claim Chavez Jr. used his status and connections to support cartel activities, although they have not made public the specific evidence behind the charges.

President Claudia Sheinbaum has previously stated that she expects Chavez Jr. to face serious charges related to organized crime. The case represents a test for her administration’s promises to crack down on corruption and drug trafficking. Meanwhile, Chavez Jr.’s family has consistently denied the allegations, insisting he has no role in cartel operations and is being targeted unfairly.
