Big Brother Naija Faces Legal Fire as Lawyer Maduabuchi Idam Petitions NBC to Ban or Regulate Show for ‘Obscene’ Content

Activist lawyer Maduabuchi Idam has petitioned the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), urging it to ban or significantly regulate the ongoing Big Brother Naija (BBNaija) reality show. He claims the program promotes obscene, indecent, and profane content, violating the NBC Act of 1999. According to Idam, BBNaija’s current 10th edition has showcased “real-time pornographic actions” and is freely accessible via television and social media, exposing minors and the general public to inappropriate material.

In his petition titled “Urgent need to ban or regulate Big Brother Naija…”, he emphasized the lack of moral, educational, or artistic value in the show and warned that failure to take action within 30 days would lead to a court case. He also pointed to past instances where NBC banned music videos for far less explicit content, accusing the commission of inconsistent regulation and ignoring the show’s broader social impact.
