14 Injured After Rollercoaster Cart Derails at Coney Beach

Fourteen people, including thirteen children, were injured after a cart on the Wacky Worm rollercoaster derailed at Coney Beach Pleasure Park in Porthcawl, Bridgend county. The incident occurred on Wednesday evening, with witnesses describing screams and panic as the ride malfunctioned. One mother, Rebecca Eccleston, reported that a metal railing fell onto her son’s pram, narrowly avoiding serious injury thanks to a friend who took the impact on her shoulder. Her one-year-old son sustained bruises and a head lump but avoided more severe harm. The Wacky Worm is described as a “small introductory rollercoaster” on the park’s website. A car at the back of the ride reportedly came completely off the track. Seven people were taken to hospital by ambulance for further treatment. South Wales Police urged the public to avoid the area, confirming they were called to the park just before 18:00 BST. The park, which has operated since 1918, is due to close in October for redevelopment. In a statement, management said the ride involved was operated by a third party and that police had instructed them to clear the site. Refunds will be offered to customers affected by the disruption.

Rebecca Eccleston, who was visiting Coney Beach with her son and friends, described the moment of the crash as a “massive bang” followed by chaos. She said the back cart of the Wacky Worm had derailed, trapping children inside while others cried and screamed in fear. One child reportedly lost teeth after hitting the ride’s bars. Ms Eccleston’s friend’s partner rushed to help free trapped children while adults nearby tried to calm those injured. Emergency services responded quickly, with paramedics, ambulances, and a hazardous area response team sent to the scene. Seven patients were taken to hospital for further checks, while others received treatment at the park. The amusement park closed immediately after the incident and will remain shut while South Wales Police and Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigators examine the ride and determine the cause of the accident. The HSE confirmed inspectors were on site the following day to begin enquiries. Coney Beach Pleasure Park apologised to visitors for the distress caused, assuring that affected guests will be refunded. Footage on social media shows bystanders helping children off the ride as emergency services arrived. The incident has left many families shaken, with some children suffering emotional distress alongside physical injuries.
