The U.S. military has announced the deployment of 200 Marines to Florida to provide administrative and logistical support to Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The move marks the first wave of assistance from U.S. Northern Command in support of ICE operations. In a statement released on Thursday, USNORTHCOM emphasized that the deployed Marines will not engage in law enforcement duties or have direct contact with individuals in ICE custody. Their responsibilities will be limited to administrative and logistical functions within ICE facilities.
This deployment follows a recent Pentagon authorization that allows up to 700 Department of Defense personnel to assist ICE operations across Florida, Louisiana, and Texas. The decision is part of a broader effort by the federal government to strengthen immigration enforcement infrastructure amid rising political tensions over border security and immigration policy.
The Marines will not be involved in arrests, deportations, or detainee interactions. Their mission is strictly to ease the workload on ICE staff by handling support functions that do not involve custody operations. According to officials, the deployment aims to improve the efficiency of ICE operations by ensuring that enforcement personnel can focus on their core responsibilities.
In a related move last month, President Donald Trump deployed another group of 700 Marines to Los Angeles. That deployment was aimed at protecting ICE agents during immigration raids targeting individuals living in the United States without legal status. The presence of military personnel at such operations has sparked criticism from immigration rights advocates, who argue that it blurs the line between military and civilian roles in domestic law enforcement.
Despite the controversy, the administration maintains that military involvement is essential to bolstering ICE's mission and ensuring the safety of federal agents. The latest deployment signals continued federal focus on immigration enforcement as a central issue in domestic policy.
