TYLA (Female Artiste of the day)

 

Tyla Laura Seethal, known mononymously as Tyla, was born on January 30, 2002, in Johannesburg, South Africa. She grew up in a close-knit Christian family of Indian, Zulu, and Mauritian descent. From a young age, Tyla displayed a strong passion for music and performance. She would often write songs, dance, and post videos online, gaining attention for her unique voice and confident stage presence. Though she initially planned to pursue a career in mining engineering, her love for music pushed her to take a different route. While still in school, she began recording songs and sharing them on social media, eventually catching the attention of South African music managers.

Tyla’s official music career kicked off in 2019 with the release of her debut single "Getting Late" featuring Kooldrink. The song became a local hit, and its slick music video further showcased Tyla’s star potential. Her blend of Afro-pop, amapiano, and R&B caught the ears of both African and international audiences. Her breakout moment came in 2023 with the global success of her single "Water." The sultry, catchy track went viral on TikTok, leading to a Billboard Hot 100 debut, a historic moment that made her the first South African soloist in over 50 years to chart on Billboard since Miriam Makeba.

Following the success of "Water," Tyla signed with Epic Records and released her debut self-titled album Tyla in 2024. She won the Best African Music Performance at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards, making history as the first winner in the newly created category.
