Top Prosecutor in Diddy and Epstein Cases Fired by US Justice Department

Maurene Comey, a federal prosecutor involved in high-profile cases against Jeffrey Epstein, Ghislaine Maxwell, and Sean "Diddy" Combs, has been dismissed by the US Department of Justice without explanation. Her firing from the Southern District of New York follows her team’s failure to secure the most serious convictions against Combs, who was instead found guilty on lesser charges. Comey, daughter of former FBI Director James Comey, reportedly told colleagues after her dismissal that “fear is the tool of a tyrant” and urged them not to let fear influence their pursuit of justice. She had served at the department since 2015. The firing raises further concerns amid a wave of dismissals targeting prosecutors who handled cases unpopular with President Donald Trump. Trump’s administration, led by Attorney General Pam Bondi, has recently dismissed at least 20 officials connected to Special Counsel Jack Smith’s investigations into Trump’s actions surrounding the 2020 election and classified documents found at Mar a Lago. Prosecutors involved in the Capitol riot cases have also been removed. Comey’s firing adds to growing criticism of political interference in the justice system. Her father, James Comey, is under renewed scrutiny as federal prosecutors investigate his statements to Congress regarding the 2016 Russia election interference probe. He was also recently questioned by the Secret Service over an alleged veiled threat toward Trump on social media. Tensions around the Epstein case have intensified after Bondi first hinted at releasing Epstein’s client list but later denied the existence of incriminating material. Trump has publicly lashed out at supporters suggesting a cover up in the case. The Department of Justice has not yet commented on Maurene Comey’s dismissal. Her message to colleagues emphasized a commitment to justice and resisting abuses of power.
