The African Transformation Movement Proposal to Rename South Africa as Republic of Azania Sparks Debate Nationwide

 

The African Transformation Movement (ATM) has ignited widespread discussion in South Africa with its bold proposal to rename the Republic of South Africa to the Republic of Azania. 

Announced on July 2, 2025, by ATM President Vuyolwethu Zungula, the initiative argues that the name "South Africa" is a colonial relic that fails to reflect the identity and heritage of the nation’s indigenous people.Zungula emphasized that the term "Azania," historically associated with African liberation movements, signifies the land of "Black people given by God."

 The ATM frames the proposed name change as a critical step toward fully decolonizing South Africa’s national identity, aligning it with the aspirations of its majority population.
