Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount has opened up about the emotional impact of manager Ruben Amorim’s harsh remarks last season. The Portuguese coach, who took over during a historically poor campaign, had described the Red Devils as “probably the worst in United history” a comment Mount admits hit the players hard.

Speaking in a new interview, Mount reflected on the 2024/25 season where United finished 15th in the Premier League and lost the Europa League final. “As a player, you never want that,” Mount said. “It wasn’t good enough. But we’re ready to put things right.” He explained that the squad struggled with adapting to a managerial change mid-season and had little time to work on tactical setups due to a packed fixture list.
Mount stressed that the lack of pre-season preparation affected their ability to understand Amorim’s methods. “We didn’t have loads of training time. We were constantly recovering between games,” he noted.

Despite the team’s struggles, Mount said that the offseason gave him time to reflect and come back stronger. “You always look at what you can do better,” he added. United are now focused on starting the new season strong with a big opening match against Arsenal on the horizon.
Looking ahead, Mason Mount believes that Manchester United can turn things around under Ruben Amorim’s guidance. He described the manager as someone who emphasizes “details” both on and off the pitch, helping raise standards within the squad during pre-season.
“From day one, it’s been about focus and high standards,” Mount said. “Small improvements, little things that can make a big difference that’s been the emphasis.” According to him, United have already worked on key areas from last season where they lacked like conceding soft goals and failing to create enough chances.
The midfielder is optimistic that this season will be different. With no European football on their calendar, Mount sees that as an advantage more time for training, analysis, and focus on their Premier League push.
Top of the list for United is securing Champions League qualification. Mount admitted that missing out on Europe was painful but says it’s fueling the hunger within the squad. “We want to be back in Europe. That’s the goal. Champions League is what this club is about,” he declared.
He acknowledged the increased competition in the league but stressed that United are focused. “It’s tough now with other teams improving. But for us, it’s about getting the details right.”
As the new season approaches, Mount says the squad has mentally reset. They are embracing the challenge with a renewed attitude and a determination to prove critics wrong including those, like Amorim, who wrote them off last year.
