Liverpool and Wales Legend Joey Jones Passes Away at 70, Prompting Tributes from Football Community

 

Joey Jones, the former Liverpool and Wales left-back, Joseph Patrick Jones, has passed away at age 70, prompting heartfelt tributes across the United Kingdom. A cornerstone of Liverpool’s golden era in the 1970s, Jones played 100 matches for the Reds, contributing to two European Cups, a UEFA Cup, and a league title.

 His death has sparked an outpouring of grief and admiration from football clubs, teammates, and fans, who remember him as a fierce competitor and beloved figure.Born in Llandudno in 1955, Jones began his career at Wrexham, where he debuted at 17 and later returned for two more stints, amassing 479 appearances.

 He earned 72 caps for Wales between 1975 and 1986, becoming the nation’s most capped player at the time of his international retirement. Signed by Liverpool in 1975 for £110,000, Jones was renowned for his tough tackling and deep connection with supporters, immortalized by a famous banner: 

“Joey Ate The Frogs Legs, Made The Swiss Roll, Now He’s Munching Gladbach.” After retiring in 1992, he coached at Wrexham, served as caretaker manager in 2001, and became a youth ambassador in 2021. Wrexham plans to honor him with a statue outside their new Kop Stand. The football community mourns the loss of a true legend.
