(In US) Woman dies from injuries suffered in Boulder antisemitic attack

An 82-year-old woman, Karen Diamond, has died from injuries sustained in what federal authorities are calling a terrorist and antisemitic attack in Boulder, Colorado. Diamond was one of 12 victims targeted during a peaceful event on June 1 called “Run for Their Lives,” held at Pearl Street Mall to raise awareness for Israeli hostages held in Gaza.

The suspect, Mohamed Sabry Soliman, allegedly threw Molotov cocktails at the gathering while shouting “free Palestine.” Court documents state that Soliman admitted to wanting to “kill all Zionist people.” He had reportedly planned the attack for a year, researching how to make explosives and disguising himself as a gardener in a construction vest to get close to the group.

Following Diamond’s death, prosecutors are adding first degree murder charges to Soliman’s extensive list of offenses. He was already facing 12 federal hate crime charges and over 100 state-level criminal charges, including attempted murder. Soliman’s lawyer entered a not guilty plea on his behalf to the hate crime counts last week.

Authorities discovered 16 unused Molotov cocktails and a weed sprayer filled with gasoline at the scene, indicating the attack could have been even deadlier. Soliman, an Egyptian national, is reportedly living in the United States illegally with his wife and five children. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detained his family days after the attack.

District Attorney Michael Dougherty expressed condolences to the Diamond family, calling the incident a horrific and premeditated act of violence that has now turned fatal. This incident comes amid a troubling rise in antisemitic attacks, with data from the Anti-Defamation League showing record spikes in 2023 and 2024.

The case has drawn national attention and renewed concern over hate motivated violence in the US.
