(In Nigeria) Yoruba Nation Activist Sunday Igboho Sparks Debate in Nigeria with Comments on Buhari’s Death, Recalling 2021 Ibadan Raid

Yoruba Nation activist Sunday Igboho has ignited widespread discussion in Nigeria with a viral video responding to the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari on July 13, 2025, in London. In the video, Igboho expressed gratitude to God for his survival, alleging that Buhari orchestrated a deadly raid on his Ibadan residence in 2021, which he claims was an attempt to eliminate him.

The July 1, 2021, operation by the Department of State Services (DSS) and soldiers resulted in the deaths of two of Igboho’s aides and led to his eventual exile.Igboho, a prominent advocate for Yoruba self-determination, accused Buhari of collaborating with certain Yoruba individuals to target him, describing the former president as a “criminal Fulani man.”

His remarks, made hours after Buhari’s passing at age 82 following a prolonged illness, have reignited debates about his ongoing conflict with the Nigerian government. The 2021 raid, which authorities justified by alleging Igboho was stockpiling weapons and inciting violence, forced him to flee the country, cementing his status as a polarizing figure.Social media reactions to Igboho’s statement have been mixed.

Some Nigerians have celebrated his resilience and survival, viewing his comments as a testament to his defiance against perceived oppression. Others, however, have urged restraint, advocating for reflection rather than triumphalism in the wake of Buhari’s death.

The activist’s remarks have brought renewed attention to the violent clash in Ibadan and the broader tensions between separatist movements and the federal government, with many on platforms like X engaging in heated discussions about Igboho’s claims and their implications.
