(In Nigeria) VP Shettima Questions President's Power to Remove Governors

At a recent book launch for former Attorney General Mohammed Adoke, Nigeria’s Vice President Kashim Shettima stirred controversy by indirectly criticizing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision to remove Sim Fubara as governor of Rivers State. Shettima asserted that the president lacks the constitutional authority to oust an elected governor.

Drawing from his own experience as Borno State governor in 2013, Shettima recounted how then-President Goodluck Jonathan attempted to remove him and other North East governors due to escalating insecurity in the region. Describing himself as a “demonised person” and “public enemy” at the time, Shettima credited Adoke for advising him on his constitutional rights, emphasizing that no president has the power to remove an elected governor.
