(In Nigeria) Tinubu's Brazil Visit Ignites Outrage as State Governors Stand in for Brazilian Officials

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s visit to Brazil has stirred a wave of shock and irritation among Nigerians online, following reports that no Brazilian government official was present to receive him upon arrival.

Despite attending at the invitation of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, President Tinubu was instead welcomed by Nigerian governors who had travelled ahead of him to Brazil. This apparent diplomatic slight has triggered widespread criticism, with many Nigerians describing the snub as disrespectful.

The visit is part of the 17th Summit of Heads of State and Government for the Global South and Emerging Economic Bloc (BRICS), a major international event.

Many netizens have questioned the optics of the situation, asking why a president visiting at the behest of his counterpart received no official reception, especially at such a high-level summit. For critics, the situation reflects poorly on Nigeria’s global diplomatic standing and has once again placed the president’s foreign trips under public scrutiny.
