The University of Calabar (UNICAL) is in the spotlight following the controversial dismissal of over 300 dentistry students, ranging from 200 to 600 levels, due to the institution exceeding the admission quota set by the Nigerian Medical and Dental Council. The decision, announced by Vice Chancellor Professor Florence Banku Obi during a meeting with students and parents on July 10, 2025, led to affected students being sent home pending resolution of the accreditation issues.

Adding a new dimension to the saga, Mr. Peter Obi has donated ₦20 million to UNICAL’s Dentistry Faculty to address the crisis. The funds, earmarked for purchasing dental chairs and upgrading laboratory facilities, aim to meet accreditation standards and support the over 300 students impacted by the admission controversy. The donation has sparked renewed attention on UNICAL as stakeholders await further developments.
