(In Nigeria) OAU Bans Skimpy Dresses, Tattoos, Coloured Hair: What's Allowed and What's Not

 


Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife, Nigeria, has introduced a strict dress code policy for its students. The policy, aimed at promoting decency and discipline, prohibits a range of attire and hairstyles deemed inappropriate.

The circular outlines over twenty infractions, attracting criticism over perceived moral policing and gender bias.

The decision, dated 13 June 2025, warns that violations could lead to suspension for one or two semesters. 

Male and female students face penalties for sagging, wearing transparent clothes, hugging the opposite sex, or having unconventional hairstyles.

The directive has drawn backlash on social media, with students and rights advocates describing it as repressive, anti-youth, and inconsistent with modern standards of individuality and cultural identity.
