Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has unveiled Enugu Air, a state-owned airline heralded as a groundbreaking initiative to drive economic development and establish Enugu as a key aviation hub in Nigeria and beyond.
Launched on July 7, 2025, at Akanu Ibiam International Airport, the airline’s inaugural commercial flight marks a significant milestone in the state’s ambition to enhance regional connectivity, create jobs, and set a new standard for public-private collaboration in Nigeria’s aviation sector.
Enugu Air begins operations with a fleet of three Embraer jets, with planned routes connecting Enugu to major cities like Abuja and Lagos. The airline is a cornerstone of the state’s N41.1 billion transport investment outlined in the 2025 budget, reflecting Governor Mbah’s vision to modernize infrastructure and stimulate economic growth.
The initiative is expected to generate employment opportunities, particularly for young people, while fostering trade and tourism in the region.Beyond passenger services, Mbah’s administration has secured partnerships with leading aviation stakeholders to develop critical infrastructure, including cargo terminals and maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facilities. Additionally, youth training programs have been introduced to build a skilled workforce, ensuring the airline’s long-term sustainability. The launch has sparked widespread enthusiasm, with many praising Enugu Air as a bold step toward positioning Enugu State as a leader in Nigeria’s aviation landscape.
