(In Nigeria) Dr. Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed Expresses Support for ADC’s 2027 Candidate, Stays Loyal to Labour Party

Dr. Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, the 2023 Labour Party vice presidential candidate and running mate to Peter Obi, has sparked significant attention in Nigeria following a July 3, 2025, interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time. During the discussion, Baba-Ahmed expressed his willingness to collaborate with whoever emerges as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate for the 2027 election, provided the primary process is credible and transparent.

He emphasized the importance of a “clean and transparent primary,” stating, “I need to see a very clean and transparent primary is taking place, will that happen I don’t know”.Clarifying his political stance, Baba-Ahmed affirmed his continued commitment to the Labour Party, dispelling speculations of a defection. “I attended the coalition’s meetings out of national interest. But I am still very much a Labour Party chieftain,” he said, addressing his presence at the ADC coalition launch on July 2, 2025, at the Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja.

The ADC was unveiled as the platform for a coalition of opposition leaders, including Atiku Abubakar, Rotimi Amaechi, and Peter Obi, aiming to challenge President Bola Tinubu in 2027. Baba-Ahmed’s remarks have fueled discussions about his role in the coalition and the broader opposition strategy, with some praising his call for electoral integrity.
