(In Nigeria) Controversy Erupts as Tinubu Renames UNIMAID to Muhammadu Buhari University in Honour of Late President

The University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) is currently at the center of heated national debate after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu announced plans to rename the institution in honour of late President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away last Sunday.

The announcement was made during a special session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC), held at the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The decision has sparked widespread backlash across social media platforms, with many Nigerians expressing strong disapproval. Critics are questioning the rationale behind renaming a Borno State-based university after Buhari, rather than choosing an institution in Katsina State his home state.

Netizens argue that the move appears politically motivated and fails to respect regional and institutional identities. The renaming of UNIMAID has become a trending topic nationwide, as Nigerians continue to voice concerns over the government’s priorities and handling of national honours.
