(In Nigeria) ASUU Launches Nationwide Strike Over Delayed June 2025 Salaries

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has sparked widespread concern in Nigeria by announcing a nationwide strike, triggered by the Federal Government’s delay in paying June 2025 salaries. The action, which has sent shockwaves through the education sector, is rooted in the union’s strict “No Pay, No Work” policy, as confirmed by ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna.

Prof. Piwuna emphasized that the strike aligns with the National Executive Council’s (NEC) resolution, which mandates that if salaries are delayed by more than three days in any month, ASUU members must suspend services until payments are cleared. “We are simply implementing the NEC’s agreement,” Piwuna stated, underscoring the union’s commitment to enforcing its policies.

The abrupt strike has disrupted academic activities across Nigerian universities, leaving students and stakeholders anxious about the potential impact on the academic calendar. Social media platforms are buzzing with reactions, as Nigerians express frustration over recurring disputes between ASUU and the government. Many are calling for urgent dialogue to resolve the impasse and prevent further disruptions.

The Federal Government has yet to issue an official response, but pressure is mounting for swift action to address the salary delays and avert prolonged academic shutdowns. As the strike gains traction, the nation awaits a resolution to restore normalcy to its higher education institutions.
