(In Ghana) NDC’s Yamin, Abanga Probed for Illegal Mining

Joseph Yamin, National Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and Yakubu Abanga, Third Vice Chairman, are under investigation in Ghana. Attorney General Dr. Dominic Ayine, acting on President John Dramani Mahama’s directive, has tasked the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) with probing their alleged involvement in illegal mining, or galamsey. Issued on July 15, 2025, the directive also calls for the Minerals Commission CEO to provide evidence on mining activities. The probe follows a July 9 press statement by the Concerned Small Scale Miners Association of Ghana.

The group accused Yamin and Abanga of leading a rogue anti-galamsey taskforce. This taskforce allegedly extorts and threatens legitimate miners in Sekondi, Bekwai, and Offinso. Yamin denies any mining ties or taskforce involvement. Abanga has vowed to resign if found guilty. The investigation also references the Prof. Frimpong-Boateng report, urging scrutiny of other implicated individuals. The probe has sparked widespread debate on galamsey and political accountability.
