Islamic extremist group Boko Haram has launched another deadly attack in Nigeria’s northeastern Borno State, killing nine people and injuring four others in the Malam Fatori community near the border with Chad. The assault underscores a troubling resurgence of insurgent violence in the region despite ongoing military efforts. Governor Babagana Zulum confirmed the attack through his representative Sugun Mai Mele, the commissioner for local governments, during a condolence visit to the affected village. He warned residents against collaborating with the militants and vowed that those found aiding the group would face consequences. The state government also revealed that new security measures would be introduced to protect the community from future attacks. Malam Fatori lies about 270 kilometers from the state capital Maiduguri and has been a repeated target due to its proximity to international borders. The latest attack is part of a disturbing trend of renewed Boko Haram violence in northeastern Nigeria, where military bases have been overrun, roads booby-trapped with explosives, and civilian areas targeted. Just weeks ago, a suspected female suicide bomber killed at least ten people and injured others in a restaurant explosion in Konduga, another town in Borno. These incidents have reignited fears of a return to the peak era of Boko Haram terror that once destabilized large parts of the country. Boko Haram began its insurgency in 2009 with a mission to impose its radical interpretation of Islamic law and oppose Western education. Over the past decade, the conflict has claimed more than 35,000 lives and displaced over two million people in the northeast alone, according to United Nations data. Beyond the northeast, Nigeria is also grappling with widespread violence in the north-central and northwest regions, where armed bandits and communal clashes continue to wreak havoc.
