Arsenal followed right processes over Partey

Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey has been charged with multiple sexual offences just days after leaving the club. The 32-year-old Ghanaian, who departed Arsenal at the end of his contract on 30 June 2025, was charged on 4 July with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault. The Metropolitan Police stated that these offences allegedly took place in 2021 and 2022 and involve three different women.

Two counts of rape are linked to one woman, three more to a second, and the sexual assault charge to a third woman. Partey denies all the accusations. His lawyer said he “welcomes the opportunity to finally clear his name.” The police began investigating the case back in February 2022, when they received the first report of rape.

Partey joined Arsenal from Atletico Madrid in October 2020 for £45 million. During his final season with the club, he made 35 Premier League appearances, scoring four goals. He also played in 12 Champions League matches, helping the team reach the semi-finals before they were eliminated by Paris Saint-Germain.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has spoken publicly for the first time about the club’s handling of Thomas Partey’s situation. During a press conference in Singapore, where Arsenal are on their pre-season tour, Arteta was asked about the process followed by the club after police began investigating Partey.

He said, “The club was very clear in its statement. There are a lot of legal matters that are very complicated so I cannot comment on any of that.” When asked if he was confident Arsenal did the right thing, Arteta replied: “100%, yes.”

Arsenal are scheduled to play AC Milan and Newcastle during their pre-season tour, followed by a match against Tottenham in Hong Kong. Despite the serious nature of the charges and the ongoing legal proceedings, Arteta kept his comments brief, citing the complexity and sensitivity of the legal matters involved.

Partey is set to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 5 August. The case has raised questions among fans and commentators about how the club responded while Partey was still an active player.
