The White House announced on Monday that U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are expected to speak this week. This potential conversation comes days after Trump accused China of violating an agreement to reduce tariffs and trade restrictions.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt indicated that the call is imminent but did not specify an exact date. It would be the third top U.S. aide to mention the possibility of a high-level dialogue aimed at addressing trade disagreements between the two nations.
Meanwhile, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told CBS's "Face the Nation" that the leaders would discuss trade issues, including disputes over critical minerals and China's restrictions on exports of certain essential materials. Bessent also mentioned that Trump and Xi might revisit unresolved concerns stemming from the Geneva negotiations last month, which produced a temporary truce in the ongoing trade war.
Despite the easing of tariffs, the core issues—such as China's economic model and U.S. concerns about state-led practices—remain unresolved, leaving broader tensions unaddressed.
