Ukrainian President Zelenskiy Plans to Attend G7 Summit and Seeks Meeting with Trump Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy announced on Thursday that he intends to participate in the upcoming G7 summit in Canada next week. He expressed hope to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the event to discuss Ukraine’s ongoing support, sanctions against Russia, and future funding for Kyiv’s reconstruction efforts. Zelenskiy highlighted that the final decision regarding U.S. sanctions against Russia rests with the White House and noted the importance of understanding how close the U.S. is to implementing tougher sanctions. Trump had recently indicated he had not yet decided on deploying additional sanctions.
Zelenskiy also emphasized Ukraine’s reliance on U.S. weapons systems and voiced the need to expand cooperation with Germany on joint weapon production. He acknowledged that if U.S. military aid were to cease, Ukraine would struggle to replace the advanced weapons it receives. German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius reported that Germany’s military support for Ukraine has reached 7 billion euros this year, with an additional 1.9 billion euros awaiting parliamentary approval.
