Trump Pressures EU to Soften Climate Rules Amid Trade Talks
U.S. President Donald Trump is pushing back against key European climate regulations as part of ongoing trade negotiations with the European Union. His administration is siding with U.S. energy exporters, particularly major oil companies like Exxon Mobil, who argue that the EU's environmental standards are too restrictive and could damage American energy exports.
At the center of the dispute are two major EU climate initiatives: the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive and strict methane-monitoring regulations. These rules, which are part of the EU’s broader Green Deal, aim to enforce rigorous environmental and human rights standards on imported goods. Specifically, they require companies to trace supply chain emissions and accurately monitor methane output, steps energy sector representatives say are both technologically challenging and economically burdensome.
In response, Trump officials have issued a stark warning. If the EU does not ease these climate-related requirements by July 9, the U.S. could impose tariffs of up to 50 percent on European exports. This move is seen as a way to protect American energy interests while leveraging trade pressure to influence European regulatory decisions.
The stakes are high. Environmental advocates warn that watering down these regulations would compromise the EU’s leadership on climate accountability and weaken the global fight against emissions leakage. If the EU concedes, it could embolden other high-emission countries to push back on similar sustainability standards.
EU leaders, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, are now weighing their options. Potential responses include rolling back non-tariff regulatory barriers or retaliating with up to €95 billion in tariffs. As the deadline approaches, the outcome will test whether economic power can override environmental principles or if the EU will hold firm in its commitment to climate governance.
