Trump Expresses Less Confidence in Iran Nuclear Deal

U.S. President Donald Trump indicated that he is increasingly doubtful about Iran’s willingness to agree to halt its uranium enrichment activities. In a podcast interview released on Wednesday, Trump said, “I don’t know. I did think so, and I’m getting more and more — less confident about it,” when asked if he believes Iran will agree to shut down its nuclear program.

Trump has been pushing for a new nuclear agreement with Iran, seeking to limit its nuclear activities and warning Tehran of possible military action if no deal is reached. He also noted that talks with Iran have been tough and that Iran appears to be using delaying tactics.

Despite the uncertainty, Trump reaffirmed that the U.S. opposes Iran acquiring a nuclear weapon, whether or not a new deal is signed. He emphasized the preference for resolving the issue without warfare, but expressed doubts about Iran’s enthusiasm for a settlement now, compared to earlier months.

Iran maintains that its nuclear program is peaceful and geared toward power generation, not weapons development. Trump’s previous administration pulled the U.S. out of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, which placed restrictions on Iran’s nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief.
