Tanzania's Suluhu Faces Scrutiny Over Alleged Human Rights Abuses

 


Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan is facing scrutiny over alleged human rights violations under her administration.


Rights groups claim Tanzanian authorities detained and tortured Kenyan and Ugandan activists, raising alarm ahead of the 2025 elections. The East African Community and global actors are being urged to demand accountability and ensure Tanzania complies with its human rights obligations.

Boniface Mwangi and Agather Atuhaire were reportedly arrested while attending opposition leader Tundu Lissu’s court hearing in Tanzania. They were allegedly tortured, sexually assaulted, and held without medical attention or legal support for four days before deportation.

The Police Reforms Working Group is calling on regional lawmakers to push for justice. Critics argue President Suluhu’s government has shifted from reform to repression, intensifying concern across East Africa.
