Spanish football star Jenni Hermoso left out of Spain's squad for Women's Euro 2025

Spanish football star Jenni Hermoso has been left out of Spain's squad for the upcoming Women's European Championship in Germany. The 35-year-old forward, who played a crucial role in Spain's 2023 World Cup victory and remains the national team's top scorer, will not feature in the 23-player list selected by head coach Montse Tome.

Hermoso currently plays for Tigres in Mexico and has seen her involvement with the national team decline in recent months. She was last called up for friendlies against Italy and Canada in October 2024 and participated in the Paris Olympics the same year.

Coach Montse Tome addressed the media on Tuesday, stating that the decision was based on competition within the squad and performance assessments. She confirmed that Hermoso's season with Tigres was evaluated thoroughly and that she had spoken with both the player and her club manager. Tome explained that several players can play in Hermoso's position, including Patri Guijarro, Maite Zubieta, Alexia Putellas, Aitana Bonmati, Vicky Lopez, Mariona Caldentey, and Claudia Pina.

The decision comes less than a year after Hermoso was involved in a controversy with former Spanish Football Federation President Luis Rubiales, who was found guilty of sexual assault for kissing her without consent after the World Cup final. Rubiales claimed the kiss was consensual, a claim Hermoso denied.

Spain has been drawn into Group B for Euro 2025, where they will face Portugal, Belgium, and Italy. Before the tournament kicks off, Spain will play a warm-up match against Japan on June 27. Their opening match in the tournament is scheduled against Portugal on July 3.
