Sadiq Khan Knighted: London Mayor Honoured for Public Service Amidst Controversy

 

In a ceremony at Buckingham Palace, Mayor Sadiq Khan was formally knighted by King Charles III, recognizing his outstanding contributions to public service and politics.

The London Mayor, who recently secured a historic third term, described the honour as humbling. The knighthood has sparked both praise and backlash, with critics questioning the merit amid ongoing concerns over crime and city management.

While many celebrated the honour as a win for diversity and perseverance, critics particularly from Conservative circles.labelled it a “reward for failure,” citing issues like knife crime and controversial policies such as Ulez. 

Khan, the first Muslim mayor of a major Western capital, dedicated the knighthood to his family and London's spirit of opportunity, urging young people to believe that hard work can lead to greatness.
