Russia has publicly announced its acceptance of the Taliban's nomination of an ambassador to Moscow, marking a significant step in the evolving relationship between the two, despite international debates over the legitimacy of the Taliban government.
According to a statement from Afghanistan's foreign ministry, the move signals Moscow's willingness to deepen diplomatic and economic ties with Afghanistan under Taliban rule. Russia, which had historically classified the Taliban as a terrorist organization, suspended its ban on the group in April—a move seen as a step toward normalizing relations.
Although no country has formally recognized the Taliban-led government since their takeover of Afghanistan in 2021, several nations, including China and Pakistan, have begun engaging with the Taliban, with some upgrading their diplomatic interactions to ambassadorial levels. Acceptance of ambassador nominations is widely seen as a symbolic step toward de facto recognition, though many countries remain cautious due to concerns over stability and human rights.
