Record Crowds Expected at Budapest Pride March Despite Government Ban
A record turnout is anticipated for the Budapest Pride march on Saturday, as tens of thousands prepare to defy a recent law introduced by Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s government that bans the annual LGBTQ celebration. This year's event, the 30th edition of the Pride march, has become a flashpoint in the broader battle over LGBTQ rights in Hungary and across Eastern Europe.
Orban’s ruling coalition amended the constitution earlier this year to prohibit the Pride march, citing “child protection” as the justification. The move has drawn widespread condemnation from the European Union and human rights organizations. Critics argue the law represents a major rollback of civil rights in the EU, with many warning it could inspire similar measures across the region.
Despite the ban, more than 35,000 people are expected to gather near Budapest’s city hall at 2 p.m. local time. The city’s mayor, Gergely Karacsony, has declared the event a municipal celebration, arguing that police approval is not required and assuring participants that no one will face legal consequences for attending. However, government officials have warned of possible fines up to 500 euros for attendees, and up to a year in prison for organizers. New surveillance cameras with facial-recognition capabilities have been installed along the route.
Orban has stated that while police will not forcibly disperse the march, participants should expect potential legal consequences. Far-right groups have announced counterprotests, raising concerns about possible confrontations.
Ministers from several EU countries and dozens of European lawmakers are expected to join the march in solidarity. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and 33 countries have called on Hungary to reverse the ban. Justice Minister Bence Tuzson has warned embassies against participation, while multiple EU nations have issued travel advisories for citizens planning to attend.
