Quincy Promes Seeks Return to Netherlands to Face Trial on His Own Terms Quincy Promes, a former Dutch international footballer, has expressed a desire to return to the Netherlands to defend himself in two ongoing criminal cases. The 33-year-old forward, who now plays for United FC in the United Arab Emirates, has already been sentenced in absentia. He received 18 months in prison for stabbing his cousin at a family party in 2020 and a six-year sentence for involvement in smuggling over one thousand kilograms of cocaine through the port of Antwerp. Promes did not attend either trial, citing his obligations while playing for Spartak Moscow in Russia at the time. He was arrested in Dubai in March 2024 at the request of Dutch authorities but was released two months later despite the Netherlands’ request for extradition. In an interview with RTL Boulevard, Promes insisted he is not avoiding justice. He claimed that contractual obligations prevented him from attending earlier hearings. “People say I’m on the run, but I’ve been trying to reach out to resolve the situation,” he said. Promes and his lawyer, Cem Polat, plan to request an adjournment of the case, offering conditions under which Promes would return. These include his willingness to fly in for court appearances and even participate in outreach efforts, such as giving lectures to young people. However, they request that he not be arrested and be allowed to return to continue his football career in the UAE. While Promes expressed respect for the Dutch justice system, both he and his lawyer refused to address questions of guilt or innocence at this stage. They confirmed that no admission of guilt is part of their proposal. The court will hold a pro forma hearing on Tuesday to discuss the status of the investigation and Promes’ potential return.
