Putin Ready to Assist Trump in Iran Nuclear Negotiations, Says Kremlin
President Vladimir Putin has indicated he is willing to leverage Russia’s close ties with Iran to help facilitate negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program, the Kremlin announced on Thursday.
Following a phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump, Putin reportedly suggested that Russia could play a constructive role in reaching a rapid resolution to Iran’s nuclear issues, although Iran has been slow-walking negotiations.
Trump emphasized the urgency, stating that Iran must decide on its nuclear ambitions, and he believed Putin agreed that Iran should not possess nuclear weapons. Putin’s involvement would be coordinated through various channels, with Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov affirming that Russia remains in ongoing dialogue with both Iran and the U.S.
Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, emphasized that abandoning uranium enrichment was against Iran’s interests, rejecting U.S. demands and asserting Iran’s commitment to self-reliance. The negotiations continue with several critical issues unresolved, including Iran’s insistence on maintaining uranium enrichment on its soil.
