U.S. President Donald Trump discussed the possibility of collaboration with Japan on developing technology for his ambitious missile defense project, the Golden Dome, during a recent phone call with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, the Nikkei reported. The planned missile shield is part of Trump's broader defense strategy and is aimed at intercepting incoming threats.
The two nations are expected to work together on systems designed to intercept and neutralize missile threats, with Japan’s involvement seen as potentially serving as a strategic bargaining chip in ongoing tariff negotiations between the U.S. and Japan. The report did not cite specific sources.

Trump announced earlier this month that he had chosen a design for the $175 billion defense shield and appointed U.S. Space Force General Michael Guetlein to oversee the project, which aims to be completed by the end of Trump’s term in 2029. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that the entire program could cost approximately $831 billion over 20 years.
Previously, the U.S. and Japan have collaborated on ballistic missile defense efforts, including the joint development of interceptors capable of targeting warheads in space. The most recent discussions indicate a willingness to deepen this cooperation as part of broader security and diplomatic strategies.
