While receiving the honorary degree at Whitworth Hall from University Chancellor Nazir Afzal, Guardiola used his platform to express deep sorrow over the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The conflict escalated after Hamas-led militants launched an attack on October 7, 2023, resulting in the deaths of 1,200 people and the kidnapping of 251 hostages, according to Israeli sources. Guardiola said, “It is so painful what we see in Gaza. It hurts my whole body. It is not about ideology. It is about the love of life and the care for your neighbour.” He emphasized the suffering of children, comparing them to his own. “I see my kids, Maria, Marius and Valentina. When I see the children of Gaza every morning since the nightmare started, I am so scared.” His speech drew attention for its emotional and human-centered focus rather than political debate.
