Over 200 Killed in Air India Plane Crash as One British Passenger Survives A major tragedy occurred when an Air India flight, carrying 242 people and bound for London, crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad, western India. According to the local police chief, at least 204 bodies have been recovered; however, it remains unclear how many victims were on the plane and how many were on the ground at the time of the crash. One passenger, reportedly British, survived the accident. Vishwash Kumar Ramesh shared his experience, describing a loud noise followed by the crash just thirty seconds after takeoff, happening very quickly. The flight had 169 Indian nationals, 53 Britons, seven Portuguese nationals, and one Canadian passenger, according to Air India. The plane crashed into accommodations used by doctors, with a woman recounting how her son survived by jumping from a second-floor window.
Air India is organizing relief flights from Delhi and Mumbai for families of the passengers and crew. These flights are scheduled to arrive in Ahmedabad later Thursday evening and depart shortly after. Families and media have gathered at the airport, with a dedicated reception center set up for loved ones. Many in the community, including British Gujaratis traveling from London, described this as the worst tragedy affecting their community since the Bhuj earthquake in 2001.
