Martin Zubimendi is joining Arsenal from Real Sociedad for £51 million as Mikel Arteta looks to complete his midfield. The 26-year-old Spaniard is widely regarded as one of the best defensive midfielders in the world and is expected to replace Thomas Partey in Arsenal’s midfield trio alongside Declan Rice and Martin Ødegaard. Zubimendi has spent his entire career at Sociedad, making over 230 appearances, and is known for his intelligence, positioning, and ability to dictate play from deep.
While not a flashy player, Zubimendi excels in key metrics like passing accuracy, progressive passes, tackles, interceptions, and aerial duels. Last season, he operated mostly in a 4-1-4-1 formation as the lone pivot. Spanish journalist Guillem Balague describes him as a player who rarely loses the ball, reads the game well, and quietly leads by example. He helps build attacks from deep, presses with precision, and adds stability to the team. His presence could allow Rice to push further forward, offering Arsenal more tactical flexibility.
Zubimendi rejected Liverpool last summer but is now ready for a Premier League challenge with Arsenal, showing his commitment to Arteta’s project. His arrival signals a key upgrade in Arsenal’s midfield as they aim to challenge for major trophies.

Martin Zubimendi’s growing reputation also comes from his strong performances for Spain. He has earned 19 international caps and stepped up impressively during the Euro 2024 final when Rodri was injured. Many thought Spain would weaken, but Zubimendi helped lead them to a 2-1 win over England. He also impressed in the 2025 Nations League, finishing among the top players in interceptions and tackles while contributing goals in key matches.
Though Rodri is ahead of him in the pecking order, Zubimendi proved he could be a starter for Spain without the team losing quality. Guillem Balague and Thierry Henry both rate him among the top five defensive midfielders in the world. His intelligence and game-reading ability make him more than just a physical presence – he is a modern, complete midfielder.
Real Madrid were reportedly interested, especially with their manager Xabi Alonso sharing a similar background with Zubimendi. However, the player preferred Arsenal’s project. At Arsenal, he is expected to replace Partey, who is out of contract soon, and will offer more defensive balance than his predecessor. Unlike Partey, Zubimendi stays more central and is more involved in the buildup from deep.
His signing could unlock even more potential in Rice and Odegaard, as well as offer defensive cover when Arsenal go forward. The Gunners are also chasing a new striker, meaning their new-look midfield could be the base for a title-winning side.
