Mbappe can win Ballon d'Or FIVE times as Ramos backs him over Yamal

Sergio Ramos has publicly thrown his support behind Kylian Mbappe in the 2025 Ballon d’Or race. The former Real Madrid captain believes Mbappe is more than deserving of the prestigious award, even if his debut season at Madrid did not come with major trophies. Ramos and Mbappe played together at Paris Saint-Germain for two seasons between 2021 and 2023. Now based in Mexico with Monterrey, Ramos still keeps a close eye on European football and especially Mbappe’s journey.

In his first season at Real Madrid, Mbappe had a slow start but found his rhythm as the campaign progressed. He scored a staggering 43 goals in 56 matches across all competitions, which included 31 in La Liga   enough to claim the European Golden Shoe. However, Real Madrid failed to win La Liga or the Copa del Rey, both of which were taken by rivals Barcelona. The club’s Champions League defense also ended early, with a heavy 5-1 quarter-final loss to Arsenal.

Despite the lack of team trophies, Ramos believes that the Ballon d’Or remains an individual honor. “These are individual awards, not collective ones,” he said. “If it were up to me, Kylian would have the peace of mind of taking home four or five Ballons d’Or in five or ten years.”

Ramos highlighted that while players like Ousmane Dembele, Lamine Yamal, and Raphinha have won more titles this season, Mbappe's consistency and goal-scoring prowess set him apart. He also pointed out the vague criteria behind Ballon d’Or voting, suggesting that opinions often play a bigger role than statistics alone. Ramos concluded by saying Mbappe had “a great season” and showed he belongs at the very top of the game.

While Kylian Mbappe dazzled in front of goal for Real Madrid, he ended the 2024-25 campaign without a major club title  a factor that could complicate his Ballon d’Or chances. However, Sergio Ramos remains confident that Mbappe’s personal achievements far outweigh Madrid’s collective shortcomings this season. The French forward’s incredible tally of 43 goals in all competitions and his Golden Shoe-winning 31 La Liga strikes prove his immense impact.

Mbappe’s performances in key moments did shine, particularly in the second half of the season when he found his best form. He helped Real Madrid win both the UEFA Super Cup and the Intercontinental Cup early in the campaign, but the club’s hopes for bigger titles crumbled. Barcelona dominated domestically, winning both the league and the Copa del Rey, while Arsenal dismantled Madrid’s Champions League campaign with a dominant quarter-final display.

Still, Ramos believes that Mbappe’s overall influence can’t be denied. During a press conference on Monday, he emphasized the unpredictable nature of Ballon d’Or selections, which often mix personal preferences with sporting criteria. Ramos insisted that individual excellence should count more than team achievements in such awards.

With Mbappe now preparing to lead Madrid in the Club World Cup clash against Al-Hilal, there’s still a chance for him to add more silverware to his season. Meanwhile, Ramos will be involved in a tough match of his own, as Monterrey faces off against Champions League runners-up Inter Milan.

Regardless of how the rest of the year plays out, Ramos is convinced that Mbappe’s future is bright. He believes that the 26-year-old forward has the talent and mindset to dominate world football for years to come  and to become a multiple Ballon d’Or winner in the process.
