Kremlin calls G7 'useless', agrees with Trump that kicking out Russia was a mistake
The Kremlin expressed its stance on Tuesday, aligning with former U.S. President Donald Trump’s view that the decision to exclude Russia from the Group of Eight (G8) in 2014 was a significant error. Dmitry Peskov, spokesperson for the Kremlin, stated that Russia now considers the G7 “dull and rather useless,” given the current global economic and geopolitical landscape.

Trump had said at the G7 summit in Canada that the expulsion of Russia from the G8 was a mistake that contributed to the worsening of international conflicts, including Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. He argued that Moscow’s exclusion diminished the group’s significance and believed that Russia would not have invaded Ukraine if it had remained part of the broader, more inclusive forum.
Peskov echoed this by noting that, “We agree with President Trump: it was a big mistake then to exclude Russia from the G8 format.” He pointed out that the G7’s relevance has declined in the face of other international formats like the G20, and that Russia sees little practical value in the current G7 arrangement.
