Key US-China Trade Talks Scheduled for Monday in London Top officials from the United States and China are set to hold high-stakes trade negotiations in London on Monday, aiming to de-escalate ongoing tensions that have expanded beyond tariffs to include export controls and supply chain issues. The upcoming meeting follows a preliminary agreement reached last month in Geneva, which temporarily eased hostilities and boosted investor confidence after months of damaging trade measures imposed by the Trump administration. The talks will focus on rebuilding trust and addressing unresolved issues, particularly China's shipment of critical minerals like rare earths, which had been suspended and disrupted global supply chains.
The U.S. delegation will include Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, while China will be represented by Vice Premier He Lifeng. The discussions come shortly after a phone call between President Xi Jinping and President Trump, where Xi urged Trump to scale back trade restrictions and warned against actions concerning Taiwan. While the Geneva deal marked a step toward easing tariffs, broader concerns remain, including border trade, technological competition, and geopolitical tensions. The UK government is facilitating the talks but is not directly a party, with separate discussions scheduled later in the week with China.
