(In Nigeria) President Tinubu has brokered a political truce allowing Fubara to complete his tenure under strict conditions.

President Bola Tinubu has reportedly brokered a political deal to resolve the ongoing rift between Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, allowing Fubara to complete his term under stringent conditions. The agreement, reached during a closed-door meeting on June 26, 2025, requires Fubara to forgo a second-term bid in 2027, permits Wike to nominate all 23 Local Government Area chairpersons, and mandates payment of outstanding dues to pro-Wike lawmakers. In return, the lawmakers, led by Martin Amaewhule, have pledged not to pursue impeachment proceedings against Fubara.

The truce has ignited intense public debate, with critics arguing it weakens democratic principles and institutional independence by prioritizing elite agreements over the people’s mandate. Many express concern that it strengthens political godfatherism, potentially setting a precedent that undermines constitutional processes. Supporters, however, view the deal as a practical step to restore stability in Rivers State, which has faced prolonged political turmoil. The agreement’s implications for governance and democracy continue to fuel discussions across Nigeria.
