The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a former international footballer, Segun George Hunkarin, and his associate, Ntoruka Chinedu, for attempting to smuggle cocaine into Nigeria through Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos. Chinedu, known for his regular trips between Nigeria and Turkey, was arrested on June 24, 2025, after arriving via Ethiopian Airlines. Officials found 37 wraps of cocaine weighing 800 grams in his hand luggage, reportedly collected in Addis Ababa.
Further investigations led to the arrest of Hunkarin at the airport car park, where he was waiting to receive the drugs. The ex-footballer, who played professionally in Brazil, admitted to previously trafficking drugs from Brazil to Ethiopia but denied ever bringing any to Nigeria.
In a separate operation on June 27, Europe-based businessman Amen Okoro Godstime was arrested at Lagos airport while attempting to smuggle 5000 tablets of tramadol disguised as malaria drugs onto a Royal Air Maroc flight to Spain.
At Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu, NDLEA operatives arrested two traffickers arriving on the same Ethiopian Airlines flight. Ezenwaka Chibuzor Emmanuel, a bar attendant from Mozambique, was caught with 17.5 kilograms of methamphetamine and 3.05 kilograms of cocaine concealed in bedsheets. Another passenger, Azu Follygan Kpodar from Brazil, was found with 1.25 kilograms of liquid cocaine hidden in a plastic soap container.
Also on June 24, a Beninese national, Vode Jean-Luck, was caught smuggling 29.5 kilograms of skunk at the Seme border in Badagry. On June 25, NDLEA operatives raided the home of a known dealer, Mary Bolanle Oladele, in Kwara State and arrested 72-year-old Christy Ejaro in Delta State for illegal possession of drugs.
