(In Nigeria) Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno Officially Defects to APC, Commissioner Ini Ememobong Resigns in Protest

Two weeks after announcing his intention to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno formally defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in a ceremonial event held at the Government House in Uyo on June 6, 2025. The governor, joined by several state officials, emphasized his commitment to aligning Akwa Ibom with the federal government to secure developmental benefits, citing his admiration for President Bola Tinubu’s leadership. Eno reassured residents that his dedication to their welfare remains steadfast, regardless of his new party affiliation, promising continued focus on delivering good governance to the state.

However, the defection has not been without controversy, as Dr. Ini Ememobong, the Commissioner for Special Duties and Ibom Deep Seaport, resigned from his position in response to Eno’s move. In his resignation letter, Ememobong cited personal convictions, stating he could not join the APC and was complying with the governor’s directive that cabinet members unwilling to defect should step down. His exit has sparked discussions, with some praising his principled stance and others viewing it as a sign of dissent within Eno’s administration. The resignation highlights tensions surrounding the defection, which is expected to trigger a broader exodus of PDP officials, including local government chairmen and lawmakers, to the APC.
