Former England midfielder Lallana retires

Adam Lallana has officially retired from football at the age of 37, bringing an end to a remarkable playing career that spanned nearly two decades. He started his professional journey with Southampton, where he graduated from the club’s youth academy and made his senior debut at just 18 years old in 2006. Lallana became a key figure for the Saints, playing more than 250 games and helping them climb from League One all the way to the Premier League with back-to-back promotions.

In 2014, he made a £25 million move to Liverpool and enjoyed great success at Anfield. Under Jurgen Klopp, he was part of the team that won both the Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League in 2020. Lallana was also a regular for the England national team during his prime, earning 34 caps and representing the Three Lions at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

After six years at Liverpool, he joined Brighton & Hove Albion in 2020 before making a return to Southampton in 2024. Though his final season saw limited playing time, the decision to retire at the club where it all began brought his career full circle. Throughout his journey, Lallana was known for his technical ability, creativity in midfield, and professionalism on and off the pitch.

In his retirement message posted on social media, Adam Lallana expressed deep appreciation for every stage of his career. He spoke about the pride he felt for everything he had achieved and the gratitude he holds for the clubs, coaches, and supporters who played a role in his journey. “Southampton… the place where it all started, and fittingly where it ends. It’s the club I ultimately owe everything to,” he wrote.

He acknowledged the highs and lows of his career, noting that every experience shaped him into who he is today. Lallana gave special thanks to his family   especially his wife Emily, their sons, and his parents   for standing by him throughout his football journey. Despite Southampton's relegation in his final season, he made it clear he has no regrets and is proud of how far he came in the sport.

Lallana’s retirement marks the end of a respected and accomplished career in English football. He leaves the game having represented major clubs, won prestigious trophies, and worn the England shirt with pride. Though he did not specify his next steps, Lallana hinted at being “excited for whatever the future brings,” suggesting that his involvement in football may continue in a different capacity. His professionalism and sportsmanship have earned him admiration from fans and peers alike.
