Belgium earned a dramatic 4-3 win over Wales in their 2026 World Cup qualifier on Monday, but their defensive frailties left coach Rudi Garcia with more questions than answers.
Playing at home in Brussels, Belgium looked set for a comfortable night after storming into a 3-0 lead within the first 30 minutes of the Group J clash. However, Wales mounted an unexpected comeback, leveling the score with 20 minutes to go. Kevin De Bruyne stepped up to score a late winner in the 88th minute, securing all three points for the Red Devils.
Coach Garcia acknowledged the psychological toll of nearly throwing away a commanding lead but praised his team’s resilience. “The most important thing is that we won. Psychologically it is tough to give away a three-goal lead, but we showed our mental strength,” he said. “It is symbolic that Kevin of all people scored the winning goal.”
De Bruyne, instrumental throughout the match, sealed the result by converting a cross from captain Youri Tielemans, who also shared his concerns post-match. “We are happy with the victory, but we know that should not have happened to us,” said Tielemans. “We dropped off, conceded, and Wales gained confidence. At that point, they were the better team.”

Belgium’s shaky defence was also exposed in their group opener against North Macedonia, where they conceded a late equaliser. With back-to-back matches coming up in September; away to Liechtenstein and at home to Kazakhstan Garcia faces pressure to address his team's defensive vulnerabilities.
While the win keeps Belgium in a competitive position in Group J, the backline’s inconsistency could threaten their campaign if not corrected. For now, they leave Brussels relieved, but aware that future opponents might not be so forgiving.
